FAHRENHEIT 451
Part One
The game starts where the book leaves off. You are Guy Montag, ex-fireman
bookburner, and have made your way to New York City to help the Underground in
its fight to restore knowledge and books to the world.
Some general comments: Whether you encounter the firemen in the subway seems to
be fixed to a given set of moves. So save the game before going in and, if you
do run into them, you can go at a different time.
The hounds patrol the street during the 1st and 3rd quarters of every hour but
it takes 5 or 6 minutes to cross to the middle of 5th Avenue and no time at all
to get from there to the other side. So leave a few minutes before the 2nd and
4th quarters to be really safe if you're not chemindexed. The 451 patrol is safe
after your face and ID match.
Game saves are best done from the sidewalk. The game will record what you have
done in the building but will often put you back on the sidewalk anyway. Also,
there was a bug in my save program. When I tried to save on W41-42 just before
the Library, it would go back to the program but hung up totally on a restore.
Careful notes and maps are essential. The slow and primitive graphics make it
easier to play as a straight text game. However, the text is designed for a
graphics game. While this isn't a major problem, it does lack the memory
"joggers" of good graphics or all text games.
Since, collecting quotes and "tools" requires some complicated routes, if you
know the quotes and information, you can collect your equipment without running
all over 5th Avenue. And, of course, the quotes require careful spelling and
punctuation.
By the way, watch out for the coded hints in the book. Two of the ones in my
book were wrong and there are two more I still can't figure out. Overall, in
spite of a somewhat buggy design, the game is challenging and absorbing. One
feature I especially like is that, once you know it has a limited number of
error messages, it does not cheat. So, let's go "make a little light."
FAHRENHEIT 451
Part Two
When you start, you're standing near a pile of leaves in the SE corner of
Central Park, carrying a false ID with someone else's picture on it. EXAMINE the
LEAVES and OPEN the GRATING. Go Down, SE, and Up to find yourself standing on a
plaza in the NW corner of Central Park South. Go S to the fountain and a man
will come along with some tips and a quote.
Go W, then S to the hotel lobby. GET a LIGHTER and go W into the lounge. Use
your LIGHTER and the guard will give you a tip on a quote and a place to go. The
PhantasyPhones aren't open yet, so go E out of the hotel and E again to the
sidewalk. Go S,S,S,S,S,S, and W to the Magazine Store and "flick your bic." The
clerk will take you into the back room so you can READ SHAKESPEARE and the
BIBLE.
Go E back to the sidewalk and S to the Food Center. Go W inside and "flick"
again. The clerk will give you a quote from Emily Dickinson. Your face and ID
don't match so go E back to the sidewalk. Save the game, go N to W52-53, and
ENTER the SUBWAY. Then WAIT. Both underground types down here have the same
quote (for the man at Tiffany's) and both are looking for you to use the
lighter, but the cleaning man has the actual quote while the man on the train
has only the author but has a tip too.
ENTER the TRAIN when it comes and WAIT again. When the man gets on, use your
lighter and remember the author. EXIT the TRAIN and E (or EXIT) out of the
subway. This time I ended up on W41-42 next to the Library. Another time I was
on the plaza near the hotel. It's not important. The specific order used to
collect quotes and information doesn't matter much. (Actually, a "Bartlett's
Quotations" would be just fine. Or, of course, a vast store of personal literary
knowledge!)
Go N,N,N,W,S to the Bank Clerk. Give him the "money" quote from Shakespeare and
he'll give you a card for the money machine and a code word. Go N to the
machine, S 1000. You end up in the middle of the room with your money. Go E out
of the Bank, ENTER the WALKWAY, E (it's safe; the hounds patrol the street, not
the air -- very literal minded), N,E to the Pit, GET the BUTTERCUP, W,N,N,N to
E48-49. Go E, deliver the quote you got at the fountain, and PICK UP the PHONE.
Ray, the computer, will give you his phone number and a quote. You'll end up on
the sidewalk. Go N,N,E into the Cathedral. Give the man there the "ear" quote
from Shakespeare and he'll give you a "doctor" quote. Go W,N,N,N,E into the
restaurant and GET the KNIFE. Then WAIT twice. If you "flick" at the waiter when
he comes, he'll give you a fortune COOKIE which you can OPEN for a quote you
already have. In any case, EAT the FOOD and go W,N,N,E into Glass World.
If you like, you can EXAMINE the EXHIBITS for a hint and/or the ARTISAN and BUY
a SPYGLASS to use in the Tower on W56-57 for another hint. Go S and ENTER the
CRYSTART. Type a direction and a robot will appear with some glasses. (If you
flick here he'll tell you what to do with them later.) GET the GLASSES and EXIT
the CRYSTART. Go W back to the sidewalk. At this point, if you're confused about
Melville or Carroll, ENTER the PHONE BOOTH, DIAL NYC-154, give Ray the Blake
quote he gave you, and ASK ABOUT MELVILLE and/or CARROLL (and any others you've
forgotten) and he'll give you the quotes. HANG UP the PHONE once to end the
conversation and again to put the phone back. EXIT the BOOTH, go N,E to
Tiffany's. EXAMINE EXHIBITS and a clerk will come by. "Flick" at him and he'll
give you a quote for the engraver. If you give him the subway quote he'll give
you a tetrasonde which will open an empty locker in the hotel lounge. (You may
need it to store incriminating evidence but I never did.) If you gave him the
quote you'll be back on the sidewalk.
If not go W. Go N,N,D to the Basement. USE your LIGHTER and READ the CARD, then
TOUCH the CABLE and you'll get a quote in code (backwards) and some information
for use later at the Power Center. Go U and check the TIME (if it's the first or
third quarter you can wander around or change the quote and "gadget" collection
order.) If it's okay, go W,W,W across the street to the Hotel. Go S into the
lobby, S into the elevator, and N to the Guard. Give him his quote and go W for
information on Clarisse and your mission. Then go S,E,S,W into the hospital.

Part Three
Once in the hospital, "flick" at the nurse. She'll give you some hints and ask
if you're sick. Give her the Shakespeare/cookie quote about "sick"ness, she'll
give you a quote you already have, and insist on knowing if you want to see a
doctor. SAY YES and then WAIT. EXAMINE the CABINET and GET the PAPER-CLIP. Then
WAIT for the doctor. When he arrives, give him the quote you got at the
Cathedral and he'll finish it. SHOW him your ID, he'll fix your chemindex, lock
the chemindexer in the cabinet, and disappear. USE the PAPER-CLIP which opens
the cabinet and gets you the chemindexer.
At this point, you're safe from the 5th Avenue hounds and may cross the street
at any time. EXIT the ROOM and go S and W to the Skyscraper and ENTER the
ELEVATOR. Give the operator the Bible/nurse quote and she'll give you a phone
number, a name, and an author. When you get to the tower you can USE the
SPYGLASS for a hint if you like.
Go D,N, ENTER the BOOTH, DIAL NYC-154, give the quote, ASK ABOUT POPE, HANG UP
PHONE, DIAL NYC-802, read the text with the nurse's hint in mind, give him the
Pope quote, make a note of the times and apartment number, hang up again, exit,
go S eight times, and W to the Walls Parlor. When the music stops, WEAR the
GLASSES and WATCH the WALLS. Get the room number and go E,S,S,W to the Jewelry
Store. SAY YES, BUY the RING (not useful except that it can be engraved), SAY
YES, "flick" at the engraver, and he'll give you a quote for the Magic Shop.
Give him the quote from Tiffany's and he'll give you a Library permit. (If you
give him the quote from the Food Center, he'll give you a new ID. I never found
a use for one, however. If you do get one, don't forget to chemindex.)
Go E,E,E,S to the Magic Shop. (For fun, save the game here, go inside, and
check out (i.e., EXAMINE) the hat on the counter a few times. Or do it some
other time when you're nearby and have some game time to waste.) HEAT the
PADLOCK, go E, give the quote from the Engraver, SHOW ID, PUT FACE IN HOLE, W.
Then go north and west to the Food Center. SHOW ID, ORDER FOOD, PAY the CLERK,
EAT FOOD. Then go back in and get some more food to save time later but don't
eat it. Then go E three times into the Apartment building on E51-52. PUSH BUTTON
43R and "flick" for a hint. Then TALK or ASK UNGAR and he'll give you his ID and
instructions.
You'll land on the sidewalk again. USE the CHEMITR and check the time. You want
to get to W45-46 at or later than 10:00 pm. If you have an hour or more, go the
the Magic Shop and get an Ungar mask now. If not, do it later. When you are on
W45-46 and the time's right, OPEN the DOOR and USE the Lighter. (If you ASK MAN
he'll give you a man-hole tool in exchange for your lighter. It only gets you
into the subway and I didn't find it useful. However, if you trade him, make
sure you get another lighter. You DO need that!)
ASK WOMAN, say YES, PAY WOMAN, and go E. USE the FINGERPRINTER. Cross the
street and get an Ungar mask at the Magic Shop if you don't already have one.
CHECK ID, fix it if necessary, and go S to the Power Center on E43-44.
FAHRENHEIT 451
Part Four
Okay, now it starts. You're about to begin with the "official" buildings. PUT
your HAND ON the PANEL, E, SHOW ID, and SAY DIE AND BE A RIDDANCE (from the
basement), go N, PUSH BUTTON 5, and go W out to the sidewalk. Now go North to
the Cathedral, East inside, and SLEEP. Go West out and North to E56-57.
If it's not less than 10 minutes before 9:00 am, amuse yourself by going into
the phone booth and asking Ray about authors that aren't listed. If or when it
is, go North to the Hound's building on E57-58, PUSH the BUTTON, SHOW ID, and go
E. Go S, PUSH the BUTTON, WAIT, and watch the procedure for the Library Hounds.
Go back N and W outside.
Go West and South to W54-55, 451 Headquarters. PUT your HAND IN SLOT and SHOW
ID. At the stairs on the 2nd floor, go E,E,N,N,W,S,S, then USE KNIFE. You'll end
up on the sIDewalk again with a fireman's id. Fix your chemindex and
fingerprints. Return to the Magic Shop and get a new mask. Then go to the
Library on W42nd Street. (S,S from W42-43.) SHOW ID and then SHOW PERMIT.
Now you're faced with a Library Hound. Would you believe he wants a QUOTE?! He
does! From the Bible, no less! So, give him the "dog" quote and, presto!, you're
in the Library. Go N,N,N,N,W,W. At some point here you'll run into a guard.
Whenever, PUNCH GUARD, then KICK GUARD, and you'll end up with his laser gun.
ENTER ROOM 210 and EXAMINE ROOM. USE LIGHTER and GIVE FLOWER TO CLARISSE. At
this point she recognizes you and starts to chat. (It must be *love*, the guards
are knocking on the door!) So, TALK CLARISSE, she'll wake up, take you to the
window, and tell you about the drainpipes. Go U, try to go south and you get
caught by a super-fancy Library Hound. KICK HOUND, then LEAP ON HOUND, and he'll
run howling away missing his deadly needle.
Go S,W,S,E,S. At this point, Clarisse will tell you about a secret escape
route. If you take this you end up in a New Jersey forest of the future, without
friends, living unhappily ever after, and you lose. So, you risk your lives and
go D. TALK CLARISSE, USE WAFER-5, OPEN BOX, and a lot of things happen.
You end up in Room 105, the transmission room, with a flame-thrower rifle and
Clarisse. (She's all business now.) TALK CLARISSE, EXAMINE TRANSMITTER, and
INSERT MICROCASSETTE. Automatically, you insert the other 33. As soon as you're
done the Firemen rush in and burn you both. (I called Telarium and this is the
only way. Sorry!) You are dead, but have won. You are victorious in death. The
flame of knowledge will burn much brighter and the story of your triumph will
live forever.
